If you plan on attempting calligraphy the traditional way you will need the correct type of pen and paper. There are many different types of calligraphy pens to choose from. First you have a fountain pen. This is like the pen that you use on a daily basis. You can buy refillable cartridges in a wide assortment of colors that you can use for your calligraphy masterpiece.
You also have the option of using a glass pen. These glass pens are hand blown and look similar to the traditional pens that were used during the 16th century. The glass pens are twisted into a light spiral that allows you to fill the pen for a maximum amount of usage. You can easily finish one page of calligraphy without having to dip your pen into any ink.
If you feel like be a “Ben Franklin” you might want to give a plume pen a try. This pen is made out of goose quill. With this type of pen you need ink that is available in bottles so that you can dip the pen in it repeatedly to refresh it with ink as you need it. Bottled ink comes in a wide range of colors and most of the lids are made with a pen holder that allows you to place your pen in between if you need to take a break. Another pen that is similar to the plume pen is the "Les Calames" pen; also call the reed pen. This pen is used the same way as the plume pen. The last pen option you have is the brause pen. This pen has a metal tip on the end of it that you dip into the ink.
All of these pens come in different sizes. Different sizes of pens will give you different results in the look of your calligraphy.
